I heard part of Jay Carney’s press briefing this morning (nothing from whitehouse.gov yet), in which he states that (1) there were only two helicopters, as opposed to the four previously stated, (2) Usama was not hiding behind a woman, & (3) he was not armed, though he nevertheless ‘resisted’. Carney is correcting previous statements made by the people who watched the raid unfold in a real-time video feed – how can they get it so wrong?
He further said that release of the photographs is still being vetted because they are “gruesome”, but Rep. Peter King (R-NY), who has seen the photos in his capacity as the chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, said yesterday that, other than a neat bullet hole above bin Laden’s left eye, the wound “was not that bad”. Coupled with the repetitive comments about how respectful we were with the treatment of the body, this is again leaning far too far on the side of concern for the sensitivities of the enemy.
Update: More press conferences, more variations, & so far, only civilian horse-holders to try to explain what happened. Are they going to allow anyone in the military to take the podium to try to straighten these things out?
